Design Under the Influence

Design under the influence.

Ever notice when a television show becomes so astronomically popular that the design trends for that year start to follow suit?

Home interiors are slower to the race than fashion, but follow they do!

Here are a few of Abode Realty‘s fan favourites from recent years:

1. The Crown

A delicious look into the lives of the tight knit British royal family had viewers on the edge of their seats for 6 seasons!  The irony here was that the show was based on real life events, so should they have been?! That aside, The Crown gave way to a design aesthetic loved by many an Instagram interior influencer.

Quiet Luxury

Quiet luxury is defined as a design characterized by understated elegance and refined consumption, emphasizing exclusivity and discerning taste without overt displays of wealth. An aesthetic that eschews logos and anything flashy in favour of all things timeless, high-quality and custom.

2. Emily in Paris

The girl is in Paris! Parisian apartments, cafes, courtyards, le louvre, provence. Her wardrobe left social media pondering how a young marketing executive could afford such a collection – but her apartment showed us that at least it wasn’t spent there.. Savoire’s office and the other architectural eye candy more than made up for it. Enough said!

Parisian Apartment

Fundamental elements of The Parisian Apartment style include showcasing art on gallery walls, incorporating large furniture in small spaces, and embracing a maximalist aesthetic with an aura of excess.  It also includes iconic characteristics such as herringbone parquet floors, full-length windows, wrought-iron balconies and marble mantels.

3. White Lotus – Season 2

Escapist, flamboyant and fun, White Lotus is a TV series like none other.  It captivated audiences with its brilliant combination of sharp social commentary, super dark humour and impeccable set design! Set against the backdrop of a luxurious Sicilian resort, the show inspired a love of the Italian Maximalist look.

Italian Maximalism

Maximalism is the art of more-is-more; layered patterning, highly saturated colours, ample accessories and salon style art, and a real sense of playfulness and bold gestures. Italian design emphasizes craftsmanship, luxurious materials, and an opulent yet more restrained aesthetic, showcasing a penchant for grandeur and functionality. Oh and loads of ceramics!

It’s not the first time television influenced design, nor will it be the last.

Television shows have wielded significant influence over modern interior design trends for years. From the timeless elegance of “Mad Men” to the eclectic charm of “Friends,” these series shaped our design preferences at their respective times and new shows eventually take their place.

Beyond entertainment, television and set designers spark creativity and inspire homeowners to embrace diverse styles. As we continue to binge-watch, television remains a powerful muse, shaping how we perceive and inhabit our homes.
